Musician Stocking Fillers (that will be useful!)

These are suitable small gift ideas for musicians of all ages and abilities. (links are included to help but I have no affiliation. I used Amazon.uk links for ease but if you’re nearby a music shop they would certainly appreciate your support!)

These ideas work well as gifts for musicians at any time of year. They can be easily adapted to a different theme depending on their instrument. (I have focused on a piano theme).

Hard-working hands at a musical instrument can use some TLC with a hard-working hand cream, especially for these colder months! To avoid residue on instruments, pat hands dry with a towel or tissue. Do this if playing straight after application before playing the instrument.

On the same note regarding hands, every instrumental musician needs a nail file to avoid long tapping nails against instruments! A reusable glass nail file is more economical and environmentally friendly than those sandpaper sticks! It means lovely instruments will not be scratched or scraped and nails won’t affect the sound produced.

A little manuscript book is ready to be your aid when a good musical idea strikes. Use it to compose your own music or practice music notation. (These books are a much better size than ridiculously tiny lined ones. Fab for beginners to advanced musicians)

A music case or folder keeps all the bits and bobs handy for lessons and practise sessions. Here are 2 examples with a music theme:

All musicians need a good music clip. This one has a piano theme.

These are sturdy enough hold most thick books across double pages. (Tip: if you are waiting for a new music clip, clothes pegs work well as a substitute!)

Mini post-it notes. I would be lost without these! They are a perfect size to mark a page in a book. They can temporarily section off parts of the music. For piano, you can mark a note on the keys for beginners to find on a piano or keyboard (eg. G#/ Ab). This version is paper (so not transparent but recyclable). A plastic version is widely available and is transparent but unfortunately not recyclable.

A good set of pencils with rubbers on the end is ideal for lightly marking music in notes. You can easily erase them at a later stage. I personally prefer a lighter shade than HB. However, finding good quality erasers with some pencils can be hard!

A metronome. Firstly, apps that are free are fantastic… BUT if you’re concerned about screen time becoming a distraction at the piano [or other instrument], an easy to use portable metronome can be a better alternative. I would recommend Korg products for their value, quality and user friendly design:

Finally, a notebook. Any music student can have questions or areas of difficulty. They could also have wonderings between lessons or orchestra practice. A notebook can be a great tool to communicate between teacher and student. It can also serve to communicate with the parent or guardian if the student is not an adult. A plain notebook would be fine. However, since it is a gifting theme, one of their instrument is a bonus!
